In Spain images seemingly exuding blood, tears, and sweat provoked veneration and miracles in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and then faced increasing skepticism. The cycle was repeated in the 1920s in Spain, the 1950s in Western Europe in general, and continues today.
