Testing the borders of permissible. Romanian theater directors under Ceausescu.
The seminar will tackle issues of how a historical evolution, based on political discourse followed by events, shaped the artistic discourse on Romanian stage and the public sphere. The seminar will also question the boundaries during communism between ethics and aesthetics, criticism and esopian language. Finally, we’ll try and see whether artists’ “survival” lessons in communism were of any use in democracy and capitalism.
